LGBTQIA+ affirming counselling in Brisbane and online

You don’t have to explain, justify or edit yourself to get support here. I’m Julie Grucza, and I offer affirming counselling for LGBTQIA+ adults and young people aged 14 and over, as well as couples and partners, in person and by telehealth.

Your identity, relationships and experiences are met with respect and curiosity. You can talk about them if they matter to you, or seek support with something else entirely, and they don’t need to be the reason you’ve come.

You might come to counselling if...

  • You’re questioning or exploring your sexuality, gender or relationships

  • You’re thinking about coming out, or have recently done so, and want somewhere to talk it through

  • You feel like you don’t belong, or are tired of being misunderstood or judged

  • Family, culture, faith or community has made it hard to be yourself

  • You’re carrying shame, anxiety or exhaustion from the way you’ve been treated

  • You’re in a relationship with an LGBTQIA+ partner and want support as a couple

  • You’re a neurodivergent LGBTQIA+ person and want someone who understands how those parts fit together

  • You want therapy that doesn’t treat who you are as the problem

How I work

My approach is client-led and trauma-informed. You set the pace, and you decide what you share and when. I don’t have a fixed idea about how your identity, relationships or life should look, and I won’t steer you towards a particular outcome.

My practice is also neurodiversity-affirming and ENM/polyamory-affirming, and I offer kink/BDSM and sex worker-affirming support. If those parts of your life overlap, you don’t need to separate them. I have received training in LGBTQIA+ affirming practices and have lived experience as a member of the community.

Couples and relationships

I offer counselling for LGBTQIA+ couples and partners, including monogamous, ENM and polyamorous relationships. I draw on Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) to understand the patterns between you and the feelings and needs beneath them.

Young people aged 14 and over

I welcome LGBTQIA+ young people aged 14 and over for individual counselling.

Ways to meet

Sessions are available in person in Sherwood or Milton, by telehealth Australia-wide, or as walk-and-talk counselling. Telehealth can be useful if travel, privacy or location makes in-person sessions hard.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be “out” to come?
No. You can come whether or not you’re out, and whoever you’re out to. What you share is confidential, within the limits in my privacy policy.

Do I need to know my identity or label before coming?
No. You’re welcome whether you’re certain, questioning or not interested in labels.

Do you only see LGBTQIA+ clients?
No. I work with a range of people, and my practice affirms diversity in gender, sexuality, relationships, neurotype, and lifestyle.

Can I bring my partner or a support person?
If you wish to have your partner be a part of your sessions, please feel free to book a couples/relationship session. If you wish to simply have a support person present who does not participate, please reach out to me to discuss.

What if I’m not sure counselling is for me?
That’s okay. You’re welcome to book a free 15-minute call first to ask questions.
