Neurodiversity-affirming counselling for adults
If you’re autistic, ADHD, AuDHD or otherwise neurodivergent, or you suspect you might be, you don’t have to explain or mask to be understood here. I’m Julie Grucza, and I offer counselling that treats the way your mind works as a difference to be understood, not a problem to be fixed.
You do not need to have a formal diagnosis; self-diagnosed and questioning individuals are also welcome. Late-life diagnosis can also bring with it an extra level of complexity, and having experienced this myself, I can offer support as you make these transitions.
You might come to counselling if...
You’ve spent years masking and feel exhausted or unsure who you are underneath
You’re burnt out, overwhelmed or struggling with sensory or social demands
You’ve recently discovered you’re neurodivergent and are making sense of your history
You feel misunderstood at work, in relationships or in your family
You carry shame about how you’ve been seen or treated
You want relationship support with a neurodivergent partner, or as a neurodivergent person
You want to understand yourself better, without being told to “try harder”
How I work
Sessions are built around how you think, communicate and process. That might mean more time to find words, clearer or more direct questions, written or visual options, movement, or less pressure for eye contact. You’re welcome to tell me what helps, and if you’re not sure yet, we’ll work it out together.
My approach is client-led and trauma-informed. We go at your pace, and you can change how sessions work at any point. My practice is also LGBTQIA+ affirming and kink/BDSM and sex worker-affirming, so if identity, relationships or sexuality are part of your story, you don’t have to separate them from your neurodivergence. I bring not only extensive experience from my years in education and as a Head of Inclusion, but also from my own personal lived experiences.
Ways to meet
Sessions are available in person, by telehealth Australia-wide, or as walk-and-talk counselling. Some people find it easier to talk side by side, outdoors or while moving. Telehealth can also help if travel or sensory load is a barrier. I am also able to adjust the lighting, noise and other sensory details within my office to best accommodate your needs.
NDIS and concession options
NDIS counselling may be available for plan-managed and self-managed clients where it fits your goals and funding. Concession appointments are also available. Please get in touch before booking so we can talk through arrangements.
Relationships and neurodivergence
If you’re neurodivergent and in a relationship, whether monogamous, ENM or polyamorous, or you’re partnered with someone who is, I offer individual and couples counselling. I draw on Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) to understand the patterns between you and the needs underneath, while respecting each person’s communication style.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a diagnosis?
No, you do not. Self-diagnosis or even just questioning individuals are always welcome.
Can you assess me for autism or ADHD?
No. As a counsellor, I don’t provide diagnostic assessments. If you’re seeking one, I can talk with you about options and what to look for in an assessor.
What if I find talking about feelings hard?
That’s common, and it’s fine. We can use different ways of communicating, like writing, visuals, movement or just slower pacing.
What if I need to cancel or I’m late because of executive function struggles?
You can find my cancellation policy here. I can also work with individuals to arrange accommodations that support executive function challenges.
Can I bring something to help me feel comfortable?
Absolutely. We cannot have animals on site, but you are welcome to bring items that would make you more comfortable. If you believe the item you wish to bring might need to be cleared with me first, just let me know when booking.
Not sure if I’m the right fit?
